The Keeper of the Stones - Avebury

The role of Keeper of the Stones at Avebury is a long-standing local title, rooted in the village community and dedicated to preserving the heritage, knowledge, and integrity of this ancient sacred site. The Keeper acts as a liaison and representative — engaging with visitors, scholars, media, and spiritual groups — ensuring that Avebury’s story and significance are shared with respect and accuracy. The position is distinct from that of the Arch Druid, though both work in service to the same sacred landscape.

Guide, teacher and druid

Gary “Robbie” Hemmings was named Keeper by the late Arch Druid and former Keeper of the Stones, Terry Dobney, who personally trained and prepared him for the role. In December 2021, within the gorsedd circle at Avebury, Gary was formally recognised as Keeper. Building on his background as a National Trust tour guide and educator, he continues Terry’s legacy through tours, talks, and public representation of Avebury and Druidry across the UK and abroad.

His work as Keeper bridges history, heritage, and spirituality — helping visitors understand both the archaeological and the sacred significance of Avebury. Gary regularly leads educational sessions on Druidry, handfasting ceremonies, and seasonal observances, and has represented Avebury at events throughout Britain and in Europe. Guided by Terry’s teachings, his approach remains inclusive, grounded, and community-focused, dedicated to sharing the wisdom and wonder of the stones with respect and authenticity.

The Druid's Vow

We swear by peace and love to stand
Heart to heart, and hand in hand;
Mark! O Spirit, and hear us now,
Confirming this, our sacred vow.

Heart to heart, and hand in hand;
Mark! O Spirit, and hear us now,
Confirming this, our most sacred vow.
